Any solution - oil or water based that helps increase motion and cut down on friction can be considered a lubricant - even just plain water.

WHY DO I NEED ONE?

Everybody at some time is going to need a lubricant and for some sexual activities it an absolute

MUST.  For women, there are times that the body just does not generate enough vaginal fluid and many things can affect this - time of the month, stress, recent child birth, antihistamines, decongestants, menopause, antidepressants, antihypertensives and cardiac agents. All of these things can contribute to vaginal dryness. Under any of these circumstances a lubricant will make vaginal penetration more pleasurable.

Anyone that is using some adult sexual aid should consider a lubricant because of the dryness of the materials that adult toys are made from.

For anyone engaging in any kind of anal sex a lubricant is an ABSOLUTE MUST! Without lubrication severe damage can occur.  There is absolutely no reason to feel any kind of discomfort after sexual activity when applying a lubricant is so easy but there are several things you need to know. Some lubricants can be harmful and some just don't work as well as others.

lube durex sachets.jpg  you can get lube in sachets (like these to stick in your bag and carry on escorts) or you can get lube in bottles anywhere from 50ml - 1 litres bottles

OIL BASED LUBRICANTS

Oil based products have been used as lubricants for a very long time. Things like Vaseline and baby oil are petroleum based. The first problem is that they leave a coating on the vaginal wall that is very hard to get rid of - thus increasing the chance of bacteria and other infections.

The second problem using an oil based lubricant is that the chemicals break down and destroy latex condoms, dental dams, gloves, diaphrams, cervical caps, sponges, as well as the protective coatings around some IUDs and any sexual device made of latex. This can also apply to body oils and creams which are never very good lubricants because they are absorbed into the skin too fast.

Becuase oil based lubes are petroleum based, there has also been reported cases of people developing chemical burns from using them. Some people are unable to use Baby Oil for massages as they can cause blisters and burns, so imagine the harm done if applied to a vagina or penis! Spot testing is recommended if oil based lubricants are going to be lube of choice.

If oil based lubes are your absolute preference just be aware of the limitations.

WATER BASED LUBRICANTS

The best all-purpose lubricants are water-based and especially formulated to be non-irritating. Once again, buying a lubricant is going to come down to personal preference - some provide light lubrication and some heavy lubrication.

Water-Based lubes use two main ingredients: Water and Glycerin. Since the main ingredient is water, water-based lubes do tend to dry up quickly. This means if your having sex for a prolonged time or having 'faster' sex, the lube will evaporate from the friction and will dry up quickly. If the lube evaporates then there will be no lubiraction causing the condom to burst or a Urinary Tract Infection is more likely to develop, so check every now and then to make sure the condom is wet enough or still lubricated.

If lubricants are going to end up in your mouth then a flavored lubricant is what you might consider buying. Some flavored lubricants are for external use only and should not be used inside the vaginal tract. If you intend to use flavored lubricants during intercourse, read the ingredients to see if it contains sugar. Sugar can cause infections inside the vaginal tract. Most sex workers report that flavored lubes will cause thrush so it is a good idea to use flavored lubes when giving a blowjob, but switch to non-flavored lube for sex.

Water-based Lubes clean up with soap and water and should not stain the sheets or clothing.

SILICONE BASED LUBRICANTS

The newest lubrication products on the market are silicone based. While they make a great body lubricant they also appear to cause damage to some silicone adult toys so your best choice if you are using any silicone products is to stick with water-based lubricants.

Like Water-Based lubes, Silicone-lubes can be safely used with all condoms. Silicone-Based lubes are excellent to use because they do not dry up like Water-Based lubes do, but can be a little thicker and feel similar to an oil based lube in consistancy. Because they are a little thicker, it can be a good idea to apply a little bit of water based lube to make the consistancy of it closer to the feeling of the natural lubricant woman and men produce.

Silicone- based lubes are also excellent for woman who develop thrush easily, because they do not contain the same sugars and other additives that thrush causing lubes do. So if you're prone to thrush, give them a go.

Silicone-based lubes are a bit harder to clean up, but a little extra soap and water does the trick.

Silicone-based lubes are excellent for shining up latex clothing, polishing shoes etc. Be careful not to run your hands thru your hair after applying lube because it will make hair feel oily.

Silicon-based lubes are now the fastest growing market of all lubes and the sex shops who sell it envisage it is the only lube they will be selling in the next few years. Silicone lubes are now available in sex shops and chemists, supermarkets are beginning to sell them along with their other popular brand names ie. Four Seasons is now making a combined silicone water based lube.

ANAL LUBES

As previously stated "Never Every Try Any Anal Penetration Without Using A Lubricant". If you're practicing safe sex oil based lubes are out of the question and you should consider using heavy water based lubricants, silicone-based lube or products such as Crisco. Sex shops now stock items such as Crisco which is primarily used for fisting or hardcore anal penetration.

If you wish to engage in serious anal activity, we recommend you go and have a chat to the people in large well knows sex shops such as "The Tool Shed" who are able to give you accurate up to date information and advice on the best lubes and condoms to use when doing anal.

FOR TOYS AND ELECTRICITY PLAY

Both Oil based and Silicone based lubricants can damage adult toys. Either use a water-based lube or protect your toys with a condom.

If using a lube for electricity play, you must use a thicker heavier lube and check continuously that the lube has not evaporated. If you do not purchase a purpose designed lube when engaging in electricity play and do not check it hasn't evaporated, you can give someone SERIOUS burns. Lube must also be used when doing electricity play because it is the lube that helps conduct the electricity. This means you will not get the full use of your machine. Recommended lube for electricity play would be something like Spectra 360 - Salt free Electrode Gel  http://www.parkerlabs.com/spectra360.html

YEAST INFECTIONS

Glycerin is a type of sugar and can cause yeast infections in women who are especially prone to them. You can check the ingrediants on the bottle to find out if it contains yeast and in what quantity. The best Lubes to use if you are prone to thrush would be the water based lubes like Four Seasons or Glyde lube which has very small quantities of thrush causing ingrediants, silicone-based lubes or you can make your own out of gelatine and hot water. If you make your own however, be aware it must be stored in the fridge and has a limited shelf life because it doesn't contain the same additives as shop bought lubes which they use to prolong shelf life.

Lubes such as ANSELL Gold, flavored lubes, KY, warming lubes, Wet Stuff are the enemy of anyone who is prone to thrush. Some lubes ph. level is evil to vagina's. Check the labelling of the lube, ask other ladies opinions, ask in sex shops for what their most popular brands of lube is. Just because a sex worker organisation gives you a tube of lube or sells it, does not make it a vagina friendly lube. Sex Worker Organisations will often purchase the cheapest product so they can afford to pass it on for free.

Many woman will become allergic to lube as time goes by. For this reason they may swap brands of lube every few months when they find they begin to develop thrush from using one. If you are constantly getting thrush and can't work out why, swap brands of lube you are using and see if it makes a difference.

BEST TIP

There are many lubricants on the market  - once again this is going to come down to personal preference but always do a sensitivity test on your inner arm or inner thigh first before using a lubricant for the first time.

If you're a sex worker and using a new lube, try it out on one client first and then go back to using your usual lube. If you have a reaction to it from using it once, you know not to use it again. Only use it once for a trial because if you have a reaction to it after just one client, imagine the reaction you'll have to it if you trial it on 3 - 6 guys in one day.

A Sex Workers Perspective

I find the best lube is a mixture of water based and silicone based lubes. I find the silicone based lube to thick and not wet enough - kind of felt like being dry f****ed, but if you put a little water based lube in your hand at the same time MAGICAL! - You get the best properties and benefits of both. It last forever, conducts heat well, you don’t need to use gallons so friction is achieved ALL GOOD :)

The problem for sex workers is the silicone lube is not easily rinsed out after sex. If you’re doing loads of jobs a day, day after day it isn’t the most hygienic thing to use. As with water based lubes, silicone based lubes are absorbed into your body but not as quickly as a water based lube.

The main problem sex workers have with lube or woman in general is the 'thrush effect'. KY is the most evil thrush causing lube. It was actually developed for use when giving woman ultra sounds not as a sex aid, therefore it has many chemicals and sugars added to it to extend it's shelf life and to make it work better when giving ultrasounds. These additives cause severe thrush.

The warming lubes are also a nightmare as are the flavored condoms because they have flavored lube on the outside of them. The Ansell lube and Wetstuff are also not the friendliest for baginas. The one's with the most neutral pH level is Four Seasons and Glyde lube and of course Silicone based lube also is a bagina's best friend when it comes to non thrush causing.

I have only heard complaints from sex workers re: the warming condoms and lube. It's pH level and other additives have a very bad effect on a vagina often resulting in thrush. The ICE condoms when they first came out were causing every sex worker I spoke to massive problems. One lady was in BIG trouble when she used an ICE condom on a client. The day after she saw him the client rang back and accused her of giving him an STI and then ran riot slagging her name off everywhere he could. It turned out it was the condom and lube that caused the rash and blisters not the lady having an STI as he presumed it was. If you are going to trial a new type of condom or lube, it may be a good idea not to do it with a client who has a lot to lose. I'd always get informed consent before trying a new product on a client.

condoms ice.jpgIce Condoms and also make Ice Lube BAD BAD BAD

It's important to be aware that many companies do their condom and lube testing on sex workers and sex workers often will not be aware of it. Sex Worker Organisations and other places you get free condoms and lube, will often be given condoms/lube by companies to give out to sex workers on the condition they report back any issues sex workers had with them. Don't assume because it was free or from a particular source that it is good for you and wont cause you some damage.
